JONI MITCHELL - TURBULENT INDIGO

Hello dearest. We have all probably heard of Joni Mitchell’s wonderful music but does anyone of you know that she was also a tallented visual artist? She designed the covers for each of her albums. In 2000 she described herself as a “painter derailed by circumstance”.

Turbulent Indigo’s artwork takes inspiration from the Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh for Mitchell’s self-portrait on the cover, and it draws on a similar energy throughout the album. The song “Turbulent Indigo” references Van Gogh, while the song “Magdalene Laundries” recounts the sufferings of Irish women once consigned to Magdalen Asylums run by the Roman Catholic Church and made to work in the asylum’s laundries.

Magdalene Asylums grew out of the Protestant rescue movement in the UK and Ireland during the 19th century, which had as its formal goal the rehabilitation of women who had worked as prostitutes:
